Birthday Dinner
While the traditional “Diner en Blanc” is an exclusive, invite only affair, held in the most cosmopolitan cities, that doesn’t mean you can’t create your own fabulous backyard “White Party” for your next special occasion. There is something innately elegant and whimsical about an all-white palette. The key to pulling off all white décor is TEXTURE. Using different textured fabrics, flowers, and ceramics. Layering your place settings, and using varying heights and shapes in your centerpiece with create interest and give your space a more pulled together look. This is generally true with all tablescapes, but is especially important when using a monochromatic color scheme. I hosted this “White Party” for my sisters birthday in the summer of 2020. We kept it very intimate, so as to be cautious and respectful. Because I wasn’t able to go out and source flowers, I made a centerpiece out of a live orchid from my kitchen, surrounded by hydrangeas from my garden. I used a quilted bedspread as the tablecloth to add texture and dimension, layered my silver and white fine china on top of my more casual “great white” Pottery Barn plates, and created a fun napkin fold to house a special birthday menu. Building layers is an absolute game changer. The sky is the limit, so be as creative as you want to be, the all white color scheme will pull it all together in the end.
